  Chapter 1: Station

Darkness. Barbara opened her eyes wide with the hopes that she could coax enough light into her eyes to see shapes. The darkness was all encompassing and the floor lay cold and hard beneath her. Her head pounded. Barbara lifted her arm and felt extra weight. She was tethered by each wrist to the floor, and she could feel the weight of her body sprawled on the floor.

“Was ist das?” Barbara heard a female voice from the darkness say.

“Allo?” Another female voice called in the darkness.

“Hello?” Barbara said in the darkness. She felt her heart begin to pound in her chest. A loud repetitive banging sounded from the dark. She could feel the thuds through the floor on her chest.

“Laß mich frei!” A voice screeched in rage.

Light burst from above and Barbara shut her eyes instinctively from the beams. Her eyes opened slowly in the bright unnatural light. Barbara turned her head on the floor and saw other women laying on the floor around her. The banging started again, and Barbara could see one of the women kicking her feet into the floor.

Barbara looked around the room to search for clues about her whereabouts. The room appeared to be metal on all sides and was bare save for the lights on the ceiling and a large metal door. Awkwardly, Barbara twisted her body so she could sit upright. It was difficult with her wrists tethered to the floor, but it gave her a better vantage point.

The room was large, and held at least 50 women. To Barbara, it looked as if the women had come from all over the world. They spoke in different languages, their clothes appeared strange to her.

“What am I doing here?” Barbara thought, trying to remember the events of the evening. Her head throbbed and her memory only got fuzzier. The last thing she remembered was going to a concert with Elaine. After the concert, they had gone to a bar where Barbara and Elaine had both met men. Barbara stayed at the table with her man while Elaine danced with hers. Then nothing. Her memory was blank until the moment she awoke on the floor.

A mechanical sound clicked and the door opened. Barbara noticed more of the women take her lead and move to a sitting position. The position may not have saved them from their situation, but made them feel more in control. In terror, all the women watched the opening of the door for any signs of life.

A man appeared at the doorway. It was Jeff, the man Barbara had met at the bar after the concert. He smirked in the doorway as he looked over this flock of helpless women.

“Jeff?” Barbara asked aloud as she heard others mutter similar questions.

  “Sabas?” One woman queried.

  “Mattias?” Another asked aloud.

It became clear to Barbara that Jeff had been sent as an agent to get her here. Another man appeared next to Jeff in the doorway, dressed in the same strange uniform. He was unfamiliar.

“Gardeeza nach nammo deeta?” The man asked Jeff.

“Dazda.” Jeff responded in a language that Barbara could not place.

Barbara watched as the man began to approach the women. The first cowered from him and pleaded in words that Barbara could not understand.

She watched the man as he injected the woman, and she yelped in pain. Barbara could not tell whether the injection had hurt the woman, or if it was the fear of the unknown that caused her to vocalize.

The man moved through the crowd of women and Barbara watched as they all received an injection. She watched the women for any signs of loss of consciousness or other ill effects. She did not see any. Jeff continued to speak to the man as he moved through the crowd.

“Cheega sanga lochla.” Jeff said as the man approached Barbara. Barbara held her breath as the man injected her. It burned for a moment.

“Sambla nala over here.” Jeff said. “We do not have all day.”

Barbara shook her head as Jeff’s words became intelligible to her. She watched the man as he continued through the rest of the women in the room.

“Why are you doing this, Mattias?” A woman said to the man Baraba knew as Jeff.

“Sabas, you bastard. I thought you loved me.” Another said.

“I see the injection is working.” Jeff said, watching the women as they turned toward words they understood. “You should be able to understand me now.”

“You are right; I can fucking understand you!” Another woman yelled from the corner. “Let me get the hell out of these!”

“I’m sorry, but you are now the property of the Heechaba Imperium. I hope you will all be obedient and useful slaves to our military.” Jeff said with a laugh.

“I have to admit that your planet’s women are very gullible. I cannot remember another pre-contact planet that was as easy to extract from. You may call me Gultah.”

“I will kill you.” A woman dressed in military garb warned from near the door.

“I doubt that will happen.” Gultah said, walking up to the woman and spitting on her. “Soon you all will be disbursed among The Imperium.”

“Phase two complete.” The man with the injection device said as he met Gultah back at the door.

“It is time to being in the men.” Gultah said, walking back out of the door.

“I will not serve.” The military woman hissed back at Gultah as he disappeared.

“You may not like the consequences if you do not fall into your role.” The injection man said, standing in the doorway. “There are strict punishments that your primitive military training will not have prepared you for.”

“You will have to kill me.” She snapped back.

“Or I can do this.” He said, taking his injection device out again and reconfiguring its settings. He injected the woman in her spine and she let out a yell. She fell back onto the floor and trembled for a moment. “Are you ready to serve?”

“I will serve.” She responded, her voice barren of emotion or inflection. Barbara stared wide eyed. It was as if the man gave her a chemical lobotomy.

“Come and see what we have in store for you, good servants of The Imperium.” Gultah said, motioning for the men to follow him into the room. Twelve men followed him in.

“I have many to choose from. They come from a primitive planet called Earth. The women of the planet are fairly docile, but can perform many tasks to keep your households running well.”

Barbara listened to Gultah in horror as the gravity of the situation began to sink in. She was being sold like livestock. She was a slave. She was 22. Her life was just beginning. She had broken free from the strict religious household of her parents only six months before. They had kept her from the world her entire life, and now that she had finally gained control of it, she had new cap
tors. She had moved one step forward, but was now falling lower than any station she had held before.

Flashes of the life she had been working toward appeared in her mind. The man she would fall in love with, the home they would build, the family they would raise, all seemed to fall away in front of her. She pushed her fingers hard into the cold metal floor and the room around her began to blur with tears.

“Honored Comet Squadron, would your leader step forward.” Gultah said, bowing slightly to the group of soldiers.

“I am Comet Squadron Leader Madaug.” One of the men said, stepping forward to Gultah. “I come with my squadron directly from battle with the Star Collective. The Imperium has granted that squadron be allowed the first bids on this cull before returning to the Imperial Sphere.”

“Who am I to say no to an imperial directive?” Gultah said playfully.

“Enough formalities. Females in the blue zone are proven breeders, purple zone are intellectually superior and suitable for technological work only, green zone are breeding ready and suitable for pleasure rooms. It also happens that we have one Imperial Gift slave that your directive gives access to. She is marked in pink.”

Gultah touched a panel on the wall, and the lighting changed. The women were bathed in different colors of light in zones as described by Gultah. Barbara’s eyes grew wide as she looked down at the soft pink light cascading around her.

Women around her began to shout and pull at their restraints. Some sat and cried. Others lay on their sides, trembling in the glow of their color.

“Before bidding, you may inspect the merchandise. No one may lay hands upon the Imperial Gift unless she is purchased.” Gultah warned as the men began to fan out into the women. Madaug remained at the front of the room. He stared at Barbara in the soft pink light. He looked at her as a conqueror.

Barbara watched Madaug out of the corner of her eye. He stood confident and strong. He had a strong jaw and a rugged face that reminded her of a woodsman fantasy she once had. The short sleeves of his uniform showed his bulging muscles that lay on either side of his broad chest.

If they had been in a bar, she would have wanted him to come to her. Here, he eyed her as an object. She was something for him to own, to use, to keep for himself. She cringed.

Screams from other women caught Barbara’s attention. The men of Madaug’s squadron were pulling at their clothes, fondling their breasts, even sliding their fingers between their legs to check for fit. Barbara felt her legs squeeze together as she closed her eyes to the nightmare.

“Good?” Gultah asked the crowd. “Yes, let’s begin. Please input your selections into your devices. If there are any conflicts, a bidding process will commence. A second round of selections will occur after the first is settled.”

The squadron gathered around Madaug and made their selections. Gultah made another selection on the wall and the lights changed again. Eight women, including Barbara were illuminated.

“Six of you will be getting what you wanted right away! All from the blue zone!” Gultah said delighted. “Please collect #7, #9, #19, #27, #37 and #43.”

Half of the squadron came forward to collect their slaves. The men released the women’s bonds from the floor and the women got up and walked away. Barbara watched as they appeared too stunned to do anything else but comply. She feared what lay on the other side of the door as they disappeared through it.

“Our next item is #22. A green zone slave, she is breeding ready and suitable for any pleasure room. I will admit that I enjoyed this slave first hand, and it was worth the trip.” Gultah laughed at the men.

“I’m a lawyer. I have rights. You cannot do this.” #22 sneered back at the men.

“#22 worked for the primitive legal system on their home world. She argued about individual rights against the rights of the rulers. Her passion will serve the winner well in his private pleasure room. Be aware that she has a temper that can either frustrate or invigorate the right owner.”

“When the U.N. gets word of this, you will not be able to save yourself.” #22 threatened in the best way she knew how.

“Will those who selected #22 please step forward.” Gultah ordered.

Three stepped forward to bid on #22. They snickered amongst each other about who could use her the best. #22 kneeled defiantly at the men who had put their hands on and inside her. She was not prepared to become a slave in a soldier’s pleasure room.

“Let’s start the bidding at five units.” Gultah said and immediately one of the men raised his hand.

“Six.” Another man said, licking his lips at #22.

“Seven.” The third man said punching another in the arm.

  “Eight.”

“Nine.” The men volleyed back and forth on price.

“Twelve.” The first man said and the other two shook their heads.

“Does that mean you two are bowing out?” Gultah asked the men shaking their heads. They turned and returned to the remaining men. “It looks like 12 units takes the prize.”

The soldier nodded to Gultah and walked over to #22. He released her hands and pulled her to her feet. #22’s eyes filled with rage.

“I am a person! You can’t do this to me.” She pulled back on the restraints in the soldier’s hands.

“Twelve units says that you are mine.” The soldier said, pulling the woman toward the door. His strength pulled her off her balance and she stumbled forward after him.

“You can’t do this.” She said, continuing to struggle as she disappeared out of the door. Her pleas echoed down a corridor until they disappeared into the unknown.

“Now before I let you two select again, we must find out who has the honor of the Imperial Gift.” Gultah said, gesturing for the selectors to come forward. Madaug and two of his fellow soldiers stepped forward.

Madaug’s eyes had not left the vision of the Imperial Gift. He had watched the reception of an Imperial Gift when he was a child. She had been fitted with the finest robes and slaves tossed scented petals in her path. He remembered her tears as she climbed the steps toward the Imperial Sanctum.

“I think that men such as yourself may be insulted by a starting bid of anything less than 25 units.” Gultah said smugly. Barbara felt her palms begin to sweat as the attention refocused on her.

“I will bid 25 units.” One of the soldiers said, pounding his fist on his chest. “I deserve the honor of this gift.”

“You are an honorable warrior brother, but I have served The Imperium longer. I have killed more of its enemies. I will bid 30 units.” The other solider said, hitting his chest in return.

Madaug said nothing through the bidding. He remained focused on Barbara. Her curvy body was unlike the muscular physiques of the women of his own culture. Her golden hair and blue eyes were rare in the universe.

“You are honorable men, my brothers.” Madaug said, stepping in front of both of them. “You shame the Imperial Gift with such bids. I will bid 250 units.”

Madaug’s men all gasped at his bid. For most soldiers, that was a whole cycle’s salary. Most of the squad had already been happy to accept the compensation of a free slave. Those who were willing to pay a little more for their preferences were not about to spend their units on honoring the image of The Imperium.

“You honor The Imperium.” Gultah said, bowing to Madaug. “May she bring honor to your house.”

Thoughts of where Madaug would take Barbara flooded her mind. She bowed her head as he walked closer. Her hands trembled in the restraints.

“This way.” Madaug said, releasing Barbara’s restraints. Barbara stumbled to her feet, feeling dizzy. She had never been a physical fighter, and the possibility that she could escape with her hands tied seemed unlikely.

“Many thanks!” Gultah said as Madaug and Barbara walked out the door. Barbara looked back at the women as she rounded the door. She wondered if she would see them again.

  Chapter 2: Casaugh

“My shuttle is down the corridor.” Madaug s
aid, leading Barbara down the bare corridor.

Barbara said nothing, but tried to gather information about where she was. Strange symbols decorated the walls and advance technology clustered in control panels.

Waves of emotion washed over Barbara as fear, wonder, despair and rage. She let the waves wash lightly just beneath her surface. Her face remained a mask.

“Here.” Madaug said, stopping at a door. He placed his hand against a panel next to the door.

“Comet Squadron Leader Madaug, acknowledged.” An electronic voice said from the panel. The door opened to reveal the entrance to Madaug’s ship. Madaug pulled Barbara into the ship and the door sealed behind them.

“Casaugh, disengage from station and prepare to disembark.” Madaug said, handing Barbara the key to her restraints.

“Acknowledged. Who is this?” A voice permeated the air around them.

“What’s your name?” Madaug asked as Barbara freed her wrists.

“Barbara.” She said, rubbing the red rings around her wrists.

“Casaugh, this is Barbara. She will be joining us on our journey to the Imperial Sphere.” Madaug said, motioning for Barbara to follow him. “Barbara this is Casaugh.”

“Hello?” Barbara said, following Madaug down the hallway of his ship. “Where are you?”

“I am currently docked at the space station Tsai’i. Please visit a bio-chair so we can get better acquainted.” Casaugh replied.

“Casaugh, Barbara’s people are much more primitive. They are not familiar with bio-evolved intergalactic technology. Please explain who you are to her.”

“Thank you for the clarification Madaugh. Barbara, I am an Herre, a bio-evolved intergalactic vessel. I was brought into service for Madaug’s grandfather 125 years ago. I served as battle transport for both his grandfather and father. I am now Madaug’s active duty Herre.”

“We’re really in space, aren’t we?” Barbara asked as Madaug opened the door to the operations deck.

“Come and see for yourself.” Madaug said as she followed him into the room.
